Studios Around Town
There are a lot of great studios around Cincinnati. My studio is not for everyone. Here are a few I know a little about:
Group Effort Studio's in KY has a great facility. 2", 1", Digital, and an Amek console that brings back the best of the 70's - juicy sound. I have produced many records there. The Engineers are the best - Bill, Dan, and Jeff have been doing this their entire lives, they live music and have great ears. The Rooms are very damped and even sounding. They have the best mics ever made. The "A" room is huge - good for large groups. they have no Grand Piano, but they do have a great control room and lounge that kind of smells like years of rock and roll. (Good).
Sound Images in Downtown Cincinnati is the best overall commercial facility around Cincinnati, imo. They offer a complete range of services - mastering, composition, great on-call staff, secretaries, reproduction, huge MCI console (last I looked), great engineers, and properly constructed rooms with beautiful hardwood floors and high ceilings. However, not much vibe. Clinical perfection.
Ultrasuade is an iconic rock room. I don't know much about them but I've done some mastering with Dave Davis in their former mastering room which was part of the also-iconic QCA. A lot of great players have played there and their records sound pretty good. The industrial neighborhood they are in has its own vibe - like maybe punk.
The million other project studios around all have their issues. I have not heard much I like from them except from Ric Hordinski's studio which I know nothing about but sounds great. I would hire the guy as a producer in a heartbeat just based on the beautiful sounds he makes and his obvious musicality. He's recently bought an old church which I suppose will be a great venue for all sorts of recording.
